The project

Birchy Hill Care Home is part of a group of nine Angelcare PLC care homes we look after. We were asked to survey their building as they weren’t getting water at the right temperature at outlets.

Our survey identified that one of their hot water cylinders was not storing water at 60°C, and failed to get to temperature. We also found that a number of the thermostatic mixing valves (TMVs) across the care home were not operating at the correct temperature. Based on the age of the hot water cylinder and the significant issues that kept recurring with the temperatures, it was decided a new like-for-like cylinder should be added in its place.

We removed the failing vessel, and supplied and installed a new hot water cylinder, brought in an electrician to commission the unit, repaired the pipework modifications, and then tested and certified that the unit was functioning at the required 60°C.

The government provides Health Technical Memorandum (HTM) guidelines around TMVs, so we replaced some of the valves with TMV type 3 in line with this guidance. The remaining TMVs required servicing, disinfecting and failsafe-checking in line with the guidelines, and all were set to deliver a mixed water temperature of no more than 43°C.

The future

Once works were completed and the customer satisfied, we were able to provide a completed extensive report of works, complete with images. We now attend the care home regularly and service the TMVs as required.
